In the myth, Pandora was given a mysterious box she was forbidden to open. But she was too curious – she took a peek, and all the evils escaped into the world: vice, sickness and death. Only one precious thing remained at the very bottom of the box: hope. This story captures the core properties of the 8th house:

Mystery
Taboo
Temptation
Self-conquest
Shadow
Crisis
Guilt
Transformation

Pandora's Box is a 360° analysis of the 8th house – the place in the chart that holds death, debts, possessiveness, entanglements, sexuality and boundary crossings. It links the Hellenistic view of the “descent into the underworld” with modern psychological approaches to shadow work, transformation and resilience. The deeper you dig, the more complex this house becomes – and ancient and modern approaches turn out to complement rather than contradict each other.

Whatever we meet down there is not nice, clean or pretty. It often brings up bitterness, shame or rancour – the sides of ourselves we would rather hide. And yet there is no wholeness without facing them. The treasure always lies at the bottom of the box.

Who is this book for?

For anyone with some astrological experience who wants to go deeper – students as well as practising astrologers. And for people living with a strong 8th house who sense there is more to it than “death and sex”: power and powerlessness, entanglements, crises, and everything we prefer to keep hidden. And what happens when we dare to look more closely.

“A book like this, on the 8th house, has never been written before. Martin is unafraid of bringing light to the shadow places.”

I wrote Mommie Dearest as a kind of self-help book – to encourage readers to explore their own Moon stories, to trace the waxing and waning of this most intimate symbol, and to embrace the complexity it brings into our lives.

The Moon in our birth chart offers clues about how we first bonded – or failed to bond – with our mother, or with a maternal substitute such as a grandmother, aunt, sibling, neighbour, or teacher. Even when no mother figure was present, the psyche still shapes an inner image of ‘mother’, drawn from longing as much as from reality.

Some remember a mother who was steady and loving. Others recall inconsistency, neglect, or even harm. For many, the truth lies in the middle ground: a tangle of affection and ambivalence, warmth and disappointment.

Ultimately, the Moon points us toward the source of ‘soul food’ and belonging. It reminds us that the task of adulthood is not only to remember how we were mothered, but also to discover how we can mother ourselves.

Who is this book for?

For beginners as well as practising astrologers who want to read the Moon in depth, through sign, house and every aspect. And for anyone who wants to understand their own mother story a little better.

“A really thoughtful, deeply human exploration of the Moon.”

DR. STORMIE GRACE

“The breadth of understanding of the lunar experience in the book is remarkable.”
